Dining with Jane and Mark: Marcel DW on Main

Our evening at Marcel in Sarasota was a delightful mix of delicious food, quirky service, and a charming atmosphere. Nestled on Main Street, this cozy spot manages to feel upscale without being intimidating, with warm lighting and sleek decor setting a welcoming vibe.

Right off the bat, our server charmed us with his candid, albeit unconventional, description of the menu as “fricking awesome.” It might not be the typical fine-dining approach, but honestly, it just added to the experience. He knew his menu inside and out, offered excellent wine pairings, and kept us laughing while ensuring we were well looked after.

The starters were a highlight in themselves. The Cauliflower Tempura was perfectly crisp and paired wonderfully with sweet chili and sesame for a playful start. The Grilled Octopus was a smoky, tender masterpiece complemented by saffron and Galician potatoes. But the real showstopper in this round? The Snapper Ceviche. With its bright passion fruit zing, spicy jalapeño and cucumber, and the satisfying crunch of tostones, it was vibrant and utterly delicious. We rounded it off with a comforting Cacio e Pepe, its bucatini pasta coated in pecorino Romano and just the right amount of black pepper.

When it came to the entrees, there were plenty of hits (and one slight miss). The Chicken Paillard, topped with burrata, tomatoes, and basil, had great flavors, though it was a tad overcooked for my taste. The Sea Scallops, however, were flawless—seared to perfection and paired with cauliflower, mushrooms, peas, and a whisper of truffle. And then came the star of the show: the Seafood Bolognese. With lobster, sherry, and cream, this dish was pure indulgence—a luxurious twist on a classic that had me glad I hadn’t agreed to share.

Marcel nails the balance between sophisticated dining and laid-back charm. If you’re after creative dishes and an atmosphere that feels fancy but fun, this is the spot. We left happily satisfied and already planning our next visit!
